This poem starts out as a meditation on the moment of silence just before a sound is heard, like before the first note of a recital, perhaps. It then goes on to nature and the awareness of sound, before returning to the human experience, and concern for the future.
I’m very surprised how typing on typewriters – as opposed to computer keyboards – has inspired me to write creative pieces. And as a consequence, I have now signed up for a Creative Writing course at Edinburgh University – twenty weekly classes focussing on poetry and the short story. No one could be more surprised than me!
The poem was typed on my Imperial Good Companion 5, on Southworth Résume paper.
Congratulations on your new studies. I hope you’ll bless us with displays of your homework.

Thanks, Joe. I’m too late to join in your writing assignments, I think. Wish I’d known about all this earlier.
